Overcoming a Critical Spirit

In 1 Samuel 24 David has a clear opportunity to take out some frustration on Saul. As David is hiding in a cave Saul comes in to “attend to his needs.” While Saul’s guard is down (literally) David can clearly move in and take advantage. Fortunately He doesn’t an in the process teaches us how to overcome a critical spirit.
David does several things;
- Resists Temptation: Just because it seems like a God opportunity doesn’t mean it is one. Don’t mistake vulnerability with divine design. David could’ve killed Saul but he didn’t
- Doesn’t listen to bad counsel: All of David’s men are telling him that this is from God. Peer pressure can be so convincing. We must really seek God on these thing because people can lead us astray
- Is Convicted by the Holy Spirit: David cuts off the corner of Saul’s robe and instantly his heart is wrenched. He knows it was wrong. When we do something wrong and God let’s us know we need to repent.
- Prevents Others from Doing It: As soon as David is convicted he tells the others not to do anything. This is important because we can allow these things to get out of hand. Stop it before it starts.
- Give Respect where it is Due: David goes out and shows Saul the robe but before that happens honors him as king. David bows before Saul and gives him the respect that he is due. Often times we tear down those above us. Make sure you give them due respect.
- Speak the Truth: David lays it our for Saul. He tells him that others are lying, he is loyal, and that he could’ve killed him if wanted to. David doesn’t sugar coat it or exagerate, instead simply tells the truth. Matt 18:15 tells us if someone wrongs us for us to go to them and confront them. Do it and do it truthfully in love.
Because David dealt with the situation in a Godly way God rewarded David’s righteousness. Saul stopped chasing him (for now) and David was able to have a little peace. A Critical spirit never brings peace. Deal with what is bothering you with someone and you will have rest.
